The fifth generation
The fifth generation. We are at the beginning of the conquest, and our ancestors are concentrating their efforts on survival, building houses, barns, cultivating crops, raising animals, and also keeping parish registers, which have often been destroyed. As a result, few events have come down to us intact.
According to our records, we have been able to identify 81 marriages for this generation. While the vast majority are located in Beauce, marriages are also recorded in the Trois-Rivières and Louiseville regions, as well as around St-Hyacinthe.
The territory is expending, and the Vachon-Pomerleau family are following its development.
What marked this generation the most, especially the descendants of Paul and Marguerite settled in Beauce, was the American attempt led by Benedict Arnold to conquer Canada, passing through the Chaudière Valley. While the general population and particularly the Church supported the British against the Americans, many people in Beauce thought differently. In 1776, a commission was set up to examine the behavior of those who aided the Americans.
Among them, in Sainte-Marie, one Étienne Vachon, father, was investigated, and in Saint-Joseph, the Pomerleau family suffered the same fate. What happened to them? Further research would be needed if you're interested.
